Who are you and what do you do?
Tarun Singh, and I am one of the founders of Campus Protein. I help with the marketing, product development, and customer experience at Campus Protein.
What is Campus Protein?
Campus Protein is an online marketplace that specializes in sports nutrition products like proteins, pre workouts, energy drinks, catered to college students.
What's your backstory and how did you come up with the idea?
My business partner Russell came up with the idea while being introduced to lifting from his fraternity brothers in college. He saw an opportunity to better service this specific market.
Take us through the process of designing, prototyping, and manufacturing your first product.
We knew we wanted to create a brand but didn't want it to be simply perceived as the traditional, inexpensive, house brand. So we put a lot of thought and energy into branding, formulations, and flavors that we thought college students were looking for. From there it was a long process of testing the products till we got them right.
Describe the process of launching the business.
Russell has never been afraid to simply take a plunge so the business was started quite quickly when he decided to buy a bunch of wholesale product and sell it to his closest friends and peers on campus. When he saw that he could undercut places like GNC and still make a profit, the rest was history.
Since launch, what has worked to attract and retain customers?
Our curation of products and brands has really helped maintain our overall approach with college students. We like to think that we still speak the same language of our demographic, allowing us to connect with them till this day.
What's the reason customers pick Campus Protein over your competitors?
I think the experience has a large part to do with that. From having access to reps who can help with product choices to a curated selection of the best products and brands for all types of students and athletes, its a great experience.
How are you doing today and what does the future look like?
We're doing well! Things are looking good as we begin to get back to some level of normalcy after the last couple of years. We are focusing on our private line, our partnerships and our content more than ever.
Since starting the business, what's the number 1 thing you have learned?
I would say that the number one thing I have learned is that its never too late to adapt and evolve. Companies often lose steam or simply come to a halt because they can't imagine doing things a different way. If you can look past that and be open to abstract ideas, you may find that there could be some catalysts hidden there.
What platform/tools do you use for your business?
We use Shopify for our ecommerce site and love it!
What have been the most influential books, podcasts, or other resources?
I really like to listen to the How I Built this series. Hearing what some of these founders had to go through brings a sense of familiarity and calm to me. It makes me realize that although unpredictable, our journey might not be so different than some of the successful people who inspire us.
Advice for other entrepreneurs who want to get started or are just starting out?
Create a plan, organize your thoughts, and just start. Do not wait to check off all the boxes on a never ending list just to launch something. You will learn more in the days of unknowns than the days preparing for something that might not happen.
