Do you sell interior design accessories? Are you planning to purchase a handmade rag abroad? It is necessary to find a reliable logistic solution provider to assist with your sipping. More so, it’s essential to learn how to ship a rug. Improper packing can destroy a rug’s integrity, resulting in dry, permanent creases, texture change, and color ruins.

Rugs are not designed equally. There is a difference in material, origin, style, and size. All these factors affect the way you prepare your rug for shipping. Besides, there is a specific way of rolling or folding a rod to maintain the integrity of its construction.

If you have to pack your rug, this guide is for you. Read through to understand the essential steps to use to maintain the quality of your rug.

Why do you have to pack your rug?

Various reasons make packing your rug necessary. Continue reading to learn how to pack your rug for shipping, transportation, and storage.

·         Shipping

Maybe you’ve bought a rug and need it to be shipped to your family or friend. If you use a mail carrier for shipping rugs, you must adhere to their policies and requirements. Here are some of the shipping parameters used by popular shipping companies like UPS and FedEx to assist you in preparing for rug shipping.

·         Transportation

When using a moving company to move your rug, ensure the rug is well rolled and wrapped. Since you don’t know how many packages of this type will be available in the truck, label your rug with location and size to make unpacking easy. Also, please don’t place your rugs at the bottom with heavy items on top of it. Place your rugs on top, especially if using a moving van. In case you are interested in the shipping methods of other large-in-size items, check also how to ship a bicycle, or how to mail a snowboard.

Another thing, when lifting your rug, holds both ends. Lifting the rug in the middle can create tension that puts pressure on fibers, thus causing creasing, which may be permanent.

·         Storage

If you’ve chosen to place the rug in storage, then you’ve to prepare it for a longer stay. The best option is to find experts to help you clean the rug through the handwashing method. Or, opt for using a vacuum cleaner to clean both sides of the carpet or even sweep the rug.

Rolling is the most accessible alternative for preparing whatever size, material, or quality of the material. Many people mistake rolling their rugs from side to side bending. Always roll the rug from the fringed ends. If the rug’s width is wider than the storage space, consider folding your rug. You can fold your rugby either one fold or two-fold roll.

These two methods affect the rug’s height, length, and girth. After folding or rolling your rug, wrap it with a breathable fabric like a bed sheet or cotton to protect against moths and mice damage. Avoid using plastic or paper to wrap your bag, especially for long-term storage.

Besides, ensure your storage facility is climate-controlled. Temperature variations are not suitable for rugs in storage. Also, the storage area must have good air circulation, be dry, secure, and clean so that mice and insects can’t get in. The most common pets that cause rug damage include carpet beetles, carpenter ants, mice, and moths.

Your rug should also be a foot or more just above the ground. You can even use mothballs to prevent destructive moths. Mothballs have an odor that can be stubborn to most people; therefore, it’s not recommended for use at home. But, if you choose to use it, you’ll have to air out the rug to get rid of the odor.

How to ship a rug

Now that you understand why it’s essential to pack your rug, you must also understand how to ship it. After measuring the length and girth of your rug, find an appropriate shipping container. Consider a container long enough that has allowance on each end.

Put the rug in the box and fill the remaining space with packing foam or even tightly packed newspaper. The fill protects the rug’s ends in case it drops during shipping. Use a movers tape to tape your container or box. Your rug will now be ready for shipping.

A smaller area rug can ship through parcel shipping services if it doesn’t exceed the weight or girth limits. However, shipping a rug through parcel shipping services cannot be the best alternative as your rug will have to be wrapped securely with durable material. It applies even to a smaller rug that doesn’t exceed the weight limit.

Another option is to ship via LTL Freight Company. The less-than-truckload (LTL) companies specialize in transporting small shipments of various products. Most competent LTL companies handle the rug shipping job efficiently and safely. The best LTL Company has years of experience in moving furniture items and is familiar with the shipping route.

Use FedEx

With FedEx, you get to select the most favorable shipping alternative that meets your budget. Choose between FedEx Express and FedEx Ground services. FedEx express services ships packages weighing up to 150lbs and with a length of 119 inches and 165 inches in length and girth. For FedEx Ground services, shipping packages up to 150 lbs is allowed with a length of 108 inches and 165 inches in length and girth.

You can ship packages weighing up to 150 pounds and 165″ length and girth combined when it comes to UPS. The shipping cost is determined by size and weight. Of all the three options, FedEx ground services tend to be the cheapest option.

To ship a rug with these shipping companies, roll and secure your rug with tape. Employ the fold and roll technique if your rug is 6×9 or larger. After rolling the rug up, wrap it in plastic with an 8-inch allowance at all ends to protect it from liquid spills.

All rugs contain moisture, and if left wrapped in plastic for more than a month, the trapped moisture can cause long-term effects on its texture and color. If you are shipping a rug weighing over 150 pounds, you’ll have to hire a trucking company. You can use Google search to find trucking companies near your location where the rug can go.

Bottom Line

In conclusion, ensure you; clean the rug; roll or fold the rug; wrap the rug; measure the dimensions, place it in a shipping box, then select your shipping service provider. Take the considerations above when packing and shipping your rugs. However, each shipping company has its packaging restrictions, so it’s not a guarantee that the company will send your rug without restrictions.
