Background

Tobias Lütke

Tobias Lütke He started his career as a web developer in 1999, and since then has seen the emergence of various new technologies.

Tobias’s love for software development led him to start on his own creating apps before he eventually joined forces with Tobi Lütke, who had also been working independently on developing an e-commerce platform.

Together they became co-founders of Shopify in 2004 which would go on to become one of Canada’s most valuable technology companies worth over 1 billion dollars today.

Lütke credits his success to being able to release a product that was quick and easy to use, which ultimately lead to Shopify’s rapid growth.

Tobias Lütke is also known for his work on the Ruby on Rails framework of web development tools after having been an early adopter himself of this technology back in 2004.

The software simplified many parts of computer programming allowing more people with less experience to develop their own websites quickly.

Early Life

Tobias Lütke was born in Germany in 1981. His father is a civil engineer and his mother an accountant. He has one younger brother.

The family moved to Canada when Tobias was nine years old, primarily because his parents wanted their children to grow up bilingual.

Lütke attended high school at Glebe Collegiate Institute in Ottawa before going on to study commerce and history at the University of Ottawa for three years.

However, he did not complete his degree since it seemed pointless after realizing there wasn’t much demand for history majors back then.

After a brief stint in the software industry, Lütke started Shopify in 2004 from his Ottawa apartment.

The company has since grown to over 500,000 users and is currently valued at over $1 billion. He remains CEO of Shopify to this day.

Lütke also has a passion for snowboarding which he likes to do as often as possible.

Tobias Lütke is one of the most impressive CEOs out there today.

He’s built an incredible company in Shopify that now helps millions of people run their businesses, all while remaining CEO.

Not only is he great at his job, but he’s also very down-to-earth and seems like a genuinely good person.

If you’re looking for some inspiration, Tobias Lütke is a great place to start.

Education

After tenth grade, Lütke dropped out of school and enrolled in the Koblenzer Carl-Benz-School apprenticeship program to become a computer coder. In 2002, he emigrated from Germany to Canada.

Position

Tobias Lütke is the CEO at Shopify. He’s also a Co-Founder along with his two brothers Daniel and Eric, who are both engineers as well.

Together they share responsibilities for the day-to-day operations of the company, but he oversees everything on the marketing side. And this includes sales too.

Tobias has always been entrepreneurial, starting his first business at the ripe age of 13. He’s also got a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Waterloo, so he knows what he’s doing when it comes to technology and building things. Impressive.

Shopify is Tobias’ third company, but it’s by far his most successful. It currently employs over 1500 people and brings in millions of dollars in revenue each year.

Tobias was recently honored as one of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40, an award that recognizes outstanding achievements by Canadians under the age of 40.

How Tobias Became a Leader in His Role

Tobias had always been interested in business and technology. As a youngster, he loved taking things apart to see how they worked.

He also enjoyed being his own boss, starting small businesses at a young age.

So, it was no surprise that Tobias pursued a career in technology.

In 2004, Tobias founded Shopify with his friend Daniel Weinand.

The two were looking for an easier way to create online stores and found that there wasn’t a good solution available on the market.

They set out to build their own platform and Shopify was born.

As CEO, Tobias is responsible for leading the company and ensuring its success.

He has grown Shopify from a small startup into one of the world’s largest eCommerce platforms.

Tobias has also been instrumental in shaping the company’s culture and values.

He is a strong advocate for diversity and inclusion and has made it a priority at Shopify.

Under Tobias’ leadership, Shopify has become one of the most innovative and forward-thinking companies in the world.

His passion for technology and business makes him an excellent CEO and leader.

Success

Since becoming CEO at Shopify in 2008, Tobias Lütke has helped grow the company to over 500,000 users in 175 countries.

With a strong focus on creating an easy-to-use platform for online stores, Shopify has become the go-to choice for businesses of all sizes.

In addition to his work at Shopify, Lütke is also passionate about entrepreneurship.

He has also helped mentor hundreds of new business owners through Shopify’s Build-A-Business competition.

Along with his work at Shopify, Tobias Lütke published a book in 2015 titled “The Year Without Pants: WordPress.com & the Future of Work.”

The book details his time working as an employee for Automattic Inc., parent company to WordPress.com, where he experienced the future of open-source companies first hand.

His experiences are chronicled throughout the story which touches on themes such as management practices and corporate culture within today’s tech world.

Tobias Lütke’s Insights

Lutke, the CEO of Shopify on e-commerce states that he is not impressed with marketing in general.

He says none of it seems to work because people are easily distracted by new things and will drop what they were doing for something shiny or interesting.

Lütke states that “If you build a better mousetrap just slightly faster than anyone else, you’re going to get crushed.”

This means being first isn’t always an advantage if your product doesn’t have quality behind it.

What matters most is how well customers understand why they should be using your service instead of another company’s offering. Even if your service isn’t as good at the time of release.
